A few weeks ago I went to visit my sister.  She moved to NW Arkansas, and it was her birthday.  A great opportunity to get out and see her new place.  Of course the question was “where are we going to eat?”

Of course we had to go to a place called The Preacher’s Son.  We had to go there because I am in fact a Preacher’s Son. And the restaurant did not disappoint.  It’s literally in an old church building.  The architecture was lovely – there is something about pressed-wood beams in church that is very unique.  It didn’t exactly look like a church on the inside, except for a few little architectural elements.  Tables and silverware kind of spoiled the church-vibe.

Growing up as a Preacher’s Son gave me a very interesting set of advantages and challenges. On the one hand, in my house, we talked about the Bible literally all the time.  Sometimes I joke that I got a Bible Degree at the “seminary of the dinner table.”  That’s how it was.  We could have multiple theological discussions going on with different family members while eating our dinner.

That was the up side.  There was a down side too.  I was the oldest kid.  So there was a lot of pressure on me to be picture perfect. Living in the pastor’s house was like living in a fishbowl.  Everything I did was visible and reflected on the pastor one way or another. The family legend is that my dad threatened unruly deacon board members with having to compete with me in knowledge of theology and the Bible.  Nothing ever came of that, and I don’t know if it was true, but it added a lot of pressure.

All in all, I think being the Preacher’s Son was a net positive. I have a tremendous love for the Bible and theology and a solid foundation of knowledge – which is what ultimately prompted me to start writing books. You don’t have to be a Preacher’s Son to learn what God has in store for you (thank goodness!).

Just for fun, we snapped a picture outside the restaurant. You can get a quick look here:

Quick update on other things going on…

  • I’ve been revamping my website.  It’s amazing how quickly that gets out of date when you keep writing books and updating them. Is there something you’d like me to be sure to have on my website? Now is the time to reply and let me know!
  • I’m continuing to make small steps on the Study the Bible – Old Testament book.  I think this will be revolutionary for some people in terms of unlocking Old Testament history books as valid study – and a tailored version of the Six Easy Steps method.

That’s about all I can manage for now, since the day job keeps me hopping and tired by the end of the day…

I have more to share, but that will have to wait for another day.

Blessings,

Dennis
