The truth is that our Christian walk is a journey, not a destination.
So there’s no way we can say “I’ve got it all figured out.”
But how do we move forward? How do we grow? That’s a big question for all of us.
What kinds of things have you been doing to fire up your own spiritual growth? Hit reply and drop me a note with your strategy.
I’ve been thinking about this a lot over the last few months. How do we grow as Christians?
Is there a pattern or a formula we can follow?
As I’ve been considering the books I write and want to write, I see a pattern emerging. And in that pattern is an answer to the question.
I think the Christian Growth Formula is actually very simple:
- Listen to God
- Worship God
When I say “Listen to God”, I mean listen to what He has to say in His word. Read it. Memorize it. Study it.
We can’t get away from the centrality of God’s Word in our spiritual walk. It’s God’s love letter to us. It is the revelation of who God is and what He wants. It’s sharper than a two-edged sword, and cuts to the heart of the matter that we need to know.
If you want to grow as a Christian, you’ll find your start in the pages of your Bible.
But it’s more than just studying and applying what God says to your life. That’s a great start. But we need to have it flow out of our lives.
That’s what worship is. It’s the truth of God’s Word in our lives, flowing out of us back to God.
Worship shows up in our lives in a lot of different ways. We could be worshipful in our daily devotions. We could be worshipful in singing. We could be worshipful in prayer.
Take it in. Give it back. This is the fundamental rhythm of our Christian life. When we invest in these two movements, the Holy Spirit is activated to change us from the inside out.
So how are you doing on the rhythms of your own growth?
Do you have both dynamics going? Are they balanced?
What could you do better to pursue spiritual growth today?
Over the weeks ahead, I will explore this further. I’m working on some plans about how I could really help out. It’s exciting and I think you’ll want to get involved.
Until then, I’d love to hear your thoughts on how you’re pursuing Spiritual Growth.
Dennis
