The other day I woke up with a song in my head. It stayed there most of the day. A little googling told me that there is a name for this phenomenon… an “earworm.”
Well, I really had it bad.
Except it was good,
“How can I say thanks for the things that you’ve done for me?
Things so undeserved yet you did to prove your love for me.”
That’s how it started. From almost the moment I woke up. Every time I took a break from work, I walked around my house singing it out loud.
“The voices of a million angels could not express my gratitude.
All that I am and ever want to be, I owe it all to thee.”
I’m sure my dog appreciated the serenade. He was the only one who heard it
Let me tell you it was really compelling. The song was in my ears, in my head, in my heart and in my mouth. Any quiet moment in my day, it dominated my awareness.
“To God be the glory.
To God be the glory.
To God be the glory, for the things He has done.”
I have to say that I really didn’t mind the effect. The lyrics were exactly the kind of thing that I didn’t mind running through my mind. Totally God honoring. I wish more days of my life were so obsessed with this kind of thought.
“With His blood He has saved me.
With His power He has raised me.
To God be the glory, for the things He has done.”
It took me a little while to place this song. I’ll be honest that I probably haven’t heard it performed or played or streamed in at least two decades. It’s definitely in the goodie-but-oldie category. Vintage 1971. Definitely one of the songs of my childhood.
“Just let me live my life,
Let it be pleasing Lord to Thee.
And should I gain any praise,
Let it go to Calvary!”
It took me a while, but I was able to finally place the song. Andre Crouch wrote and performed it. The title is “My Tribute”. and as I said, it was written 52 years ago. It was one that I definitely heard in my childhood. And now, seemingly out of nowhere, it was back in my head.
I have to be honest with you. I didn’t mind it one bit. It was nice to go back to songs that were meaningful when I was growing up. Especially songs with such a fantastic message as this.
This song was so much in me that I actually emailed my mom to let her know what had taken up residence in my head. She approved, to say the least.
So… do you know the song? Are you humming it as you read this? Have you already thought of the next lyric?
I would be totally happy if I gave you this song as an earworm. This is the kind of message that would be wonderful to be stuck in your head.
Secretly I’m hoping that by writing this, I’ll give myself another earworm.
My Pastor frequently says that we need to regularly preach the gospel to ourselves. To remind ourselves of the truth of who we are and what Jesus did. This song does a great job of that.
If you agree with e that this is a good thing, then we could make a habit of pursuing earworms like this. If that’s you, then I offer my book I Will Sing of My Redeemer. It’s a book that looks at 52 great hymns of the faith If you are like me and grew up singing hymns in church, then that’s 52 possible earworms waiting to hijack your day and keep your mind and heart focused on Jesus.
You can find the book on my website:
https://www.dennis-stevenson.com/books/i-will-sing-of-my-redeemer/
From there you can either navigate to your favorite retail store, or buy it direct from me (which I definitely appreciate even more).
I love so many of the songs in that book… But the ones that really speak to me come at the end.
- The Old Rugged Cross
- In the Garden
If you get the book, I’d love to know which song most resonates with you (which is the most likely to become an earworm).
Here’s to singing of your Redeemer all day long. It’s a wonderful thing to have songs of Jesus in your head all day.
I’m looking forward to see what happens to me in the morning…
Until next time…
Dennis
